The Bruins came out strong in the opening game of region play, taking home a 3-1 victory over rival high school, Orem High. The tigers scored in the early minutes of the first half, but the Bruins remained undaunted and Elder Aguayo sent one deep into the back of the net to tie the score 1-1. Within the next few minutes, Ben Ortiz was knocked down and Cris Zamorano scored the penalty shot. As the second half came around, play got physical and Orem made attempts to tie the score resulting in Mountain View counterattacks. Strong defensive play from Mountain View did result in a few yellow cards and an increased intense atmosphere. Jackson Mcbride scored the third and final goal of the game to clinch the win for the Bruins. Defeating Orem was a thrill for the team and the fans.

by Emi Cano and Josh Lindorf
Mountain View exceeded expectations making it to quarterfinals in the state championships and ending the season at 12-12. They were expected to go last in region. The Bruins played great in pre-region games and were excited to face the 2015-2016 season. Their first region game was a tough one against Timpview high school, MV never gave up but had their first loss in region play. Coach Groves and his team had a rough patch and lost their first 5 region games. The Bruins fought tough those games but couldn’t manage to pull off the wins. MV played a good Provo team and played hard to get their first region game. The next two games were close and even went on to overtime with Corner Canyon but loss by a last second three. Mountain View had a fire in them and went on to beat Orem, Timpanogos, and Alta. Those games were crucial to the Bruin’s post season. MV had to play a “play-in-game” in order to compete in the state play-offs. Timpanogos was in the same situation. Both teams were 1-1 against each other. Mountain View was on a fire win streak and weren’t looking to stop. Brigham Bateman lead the Bruins to a huge win leading to the state play-offs. Maple Mountain came off their region championship and looking to go far in state with their number one seed. MV played harder than ever and came up with a win as the underdog. Next stop was the Highland Rams at The U. Every player played great but had a tough loss. This has been a great season for Mountain View, especially as Coach Groves as a first year head coach. Mountain View as whole is so excited to see what’s to come this upcoming season

These are some thoughts on the 2015-2016 season by a couple of players:
“This season was a very memorable one. Starting region 0-5 and making an unforgettable run to the playoffs was definitely the highlight of our season. We really came together as a band of brothers and put together some good chemistry on and off the court.” Todd Goodman

“As a senior this year we started region not playing Bruin basketball. Before we played Provo High at home the coaches pulled us together and we had a nice talk on what we need to do to change the way we play to win. It worked and we ended a great season making it to the quarterfinals at state!” Brigham Bateman

Evan Santo competing in a triathalon
Mountain View has a great fans who cheer on the exceptional athletes who participate in the schools traditional sports like soccer, basketball, football, etc. . Many other athletes simply go by the wayside with little recognition because they compete in sports like lacrosse or diving. Some of these students are nationally recognized athletes, but many within their own school don’t even realize what sport they participate in. An incomplete list of some of these largely unrecognized athletes is as follows.

Sophomore, Mickey Strouss,  participates in not only track and field but competes with the byu diving club.

Mountain View has a combined lacrosse team with Orem and Timpanogos, with boys and girls like Thomas Miles and Andrea Ruvalacabra participating on their respective teams.

Senior, Evan Santo, participates in triathlon and has received national attention for some of his performances. He recently  placed in the top five in the elite development race at the clermont draft legal challenge.

Mountain View has many exceptional gymnasts some of whom are moving on to compete in college in the next year like future t-birds Megan and Maddy Mcbride and Kim Tessen who will be competing for Univ. of Utah.

Fui Kalaniuvalu and other MV students compete with rugby teams made up of students from all over the valley.

In addition to the individual sports Mountain View has a ping pong club and a ultimate frisbee team who frequently practice and compete.

Bruin's Baseball team in a huddle.
The Bruins played against the Kearns Cougars on March 8th, and were able to come out with a win, 7-2. During the first inning the Bruins were able to keep Kearns from scoring. But Kearns’ defense was formidable. The Bruins were not able to get any runs either. Starting pitcher, Caleb Moore, was having a very good game without letting a single run in for the first 3 innings. Until during the 4th inning Kearns was able to string hits together and score 1 run. The Bruins responded by scoring 2 points during the top of the 5th inning. Kearns was able to get a few more hits during the 5th inning and scored 1 more run. Mountain View was unable to get a hit the 6th inning. Then almost out of nowhere the Bruins came back and started hitting. Bases were loaded and then a double by Riley Sinema made the score 6-2. After that the Bruins were able to score one more run. Caleb Moore was able to pitch the whole game against Kearns. This is the first game of the season and already the Bruins have as many wins than last year. The JV team also won their game. The Bruin Baseball team is going to be good this year, with high hopes to make it to the state tournament.

LIT CHILIS

by Joshua Lindorf
At Mountain View, there are many athletes who make teams with their friends and participate in the Orem City Rec basketball league. One of these teams is the Lit Chilis. The players on the Lit Chilis are: Josh Lindorf, Emi Cano, Caleb Horton, Kade Hernandez, Preston Madsen, Quintin Ward, Fui Kalaniuvalu, Elias Lartey, and Jacob Bailey. This team consists of MVHS soccer players, football players, and former basketball players. The Lit Chilis had a rough start to the season, losing six of seven regular season games. Playoffs began, and the Chilis had high hopes of being a “cinderella” team. The playoffs were double elimination, and the Chilis lost their first game to another team of Mountain View students, Wizards of the Demon Sword. In their next playoff game, they were able to make a high percentage of their shots which lead them to a victory. As the third game of the playoffs started, the Lit Chilis came out strong offensively, but had a tough time in the paint getting rebounds. The Lit Chilis were down by two at halftime, and in the second half they came out playing as team, scoring a quick eight points to start the half. A player from the opposing team then dropped two treys to tie the score. Foul trouble caused the Lit Chilis to fall behind the opposing team. In the final minutes, the Lit Chilis could not make a comeback. They had a fun and awesome season and look forward to next year.
