The origin of Lacrosse can be traced back to the Indians of North America, and is considered the first American sport. The game was modified by European immigrants to what is now known as modern Lacrosse. So what is Lacrosse exactly? The sport is played across the country as men’s field lacrosse, and women’s lacrosse. The contact team sport is a combination of basketball, soccer and hockey played between two teams. The main difference between men’s and women’s lacrosse comes down to contact. In the men’s game, body-checking is legal while in the women’s game, it is not. As a result there is far less protective equipment in the women’s game. Men wear: helmets, mouth guards, gloves, shoulder pads, elbow pads, and often ribs pads, whereas women wear mouth guards and protective eyewear, but with the exception of goalie, no helmets or padding. A long handled stick, known as a crosse, shaft, or a lacrosse stick, is used to throw, scoop and catch a small rubber ball. The lacrosse stick has a shaft and a head that differs between men’s field lacrosse and women’s lacrosse. Men depending on the position played, use different shaft sizes. Attack and midfielders use a short crosse, and defenders use a long crosse. Women use the same size stick throughout the field using a similar stick to that of the men’s attack sticks, but slightly shorter. Goalkeepers for both the men and women use a goalie stick with a much wider head to help block the goal. Different head shapes are used in men and women lacrosse. Men use a head, also known as a pocket, made out of interwoven synthetic mesh. Women use a head made out of leather or synthetic thongs, cross-lacing and shooting strings strung in the traditional way. Regulation head depth allows the men pocket to be deeper than that of the women’s. The game is exhilarating fast paced as the players sprint up and down the field, throwing and catching the ball as they try and score in the goals. The men’s team will field 10 players while the women add 2 more players to their playing field. Men fields are slightly smaller than the women fields measuring 110 yards long and 60 yards wide. Women fields measure 120 yards long and 70 yards wide. Positions consist of attack, midfield, defense and goalkeeper.
