With Valentine’s Day being literally next week, now seems as much a time for emotions to be as high as any other. Students all around the school are infatuated with the idea of confessing attraction for a fellow student. Besides the emotions of love, happiness and various other similar emotions also comes a lot of negative. A lot of revenue is brought in by Valentine’s Day, this isn’t entirely a bad thing but spending money doesn’t appeal to a very large group of people, a lot of sadness is brought about by Valentine’s Day, people getting either rejected, disregarded or unnoticed is a very common occurrence. A lot of positive and negative memories, events and many other things are affiliated with Valentine’s Day. I see this as an opportunity to discuss the power and importance of human emotion. The definition of emotion according to Dictionary.com is: “an affective state of consciousness in which joy, sorrow, fear, hate, or the like, is experienced, as distinguished from cognitive and volitional states of consciousness.” How important are these emotions we have really? They often make people do unnecessary, irrelevant and stupid things. A teenager with a heavy heart pursues a relationship that simply lost it’s spark to a futile point that won’t help anything, a parent gets upset as a child and that child never forgets what they were told, tons of other situations that can be completely avoided and are totally unnecessary with the main offender being human emotion. However, on the flip side, human emotion is a beautiful thing that we couldn’t live without. Once again, a teenage relationship, simple and beautiful, a parent and a child share a heartfelt learning experience together, a couple is happily married for, what’s the line? “Time and all eternity?” All of these things couldn’t happen without emotion, all of our life seems to just be a rollercoaster of ups and downs, each individual human is just along for the ride, forgive me, of their life. In this student’s opinion, though I may hate them more often than not, emotions are required for and in the growth and development process of life so, here they may stay.
