Although the decision to get rid of flex still stands, the aftermath has left the students shocked and pained with the sudden realization that the “Lunch period” is nothing more than a mere break. To some flex was a time to make up grades and get lunch sooner than the incoming crowd. The part of the students that got lunch sooner also added back to the school by keeping the students happy. Although some of the students decided that flex was a waste of time and started to ditch it, that is an attendance policy issue, not a flex issue.
The result is overwhelming, when the topic of a half an hour break for lunch was brought up to Mr Francis, he swiftly replied with a quick and messy response, “That’s the same amount of time the teachers have always had” Although this may be true teachers doesn’t realize the harsher reality of the comment that made the standing decision much worse than it already is. Teachers have always had this time to eat lunch yes, but they also have a separate lunch room, they can eat during classes, and they (if getting school lunch) have the right as a teacher to skip the lines and cut of students, and they only have to deal with a few handfuls of teachers compared to thousands of students.
The lunch room also has started to have an extreme lack of food. Not nearly enough to feed all the people in this school who want that specific item for lunch. Not even to mention that fact that the nutritional value in the lunch have taken a plummeting drop. With signs posted saying things such as “Marinara sauce counts as your serving of vegetables” and “Twister fries or potato wedges count as a vegetable” The blame here is not toward the wonderful, underappreciated lunch ladies that keep the whole system of lunch running. This needs to be brought up to the administration and maybe even the district.
But is it just the district’s or state’s fault? According to themindawakened.com lunches from around the world are better than lunches in America. Try to continue to have school and national educational pride when compared to these lunches from around the world.
Are the students to blame? Blame these student if they want to leave the school grounds and get lunch from somewhere else, but in all reality with the cutting of flex it is nearly impossible to get lunch anywhere else also near impossible to eat and go to lunch detention.
Let this be said from the students of Mountain View High School “Improve our lunches and make sure there is enough to go around, or give us back our flex” If students are interested in getting flex back there is a Facebook page called “Flex Freedom Fighters” join them and help your voice be heard in the decision to bring flex back.
