Students at many schools are often saying that they don't have enough time to get to class on time. Students need time to go to lockers, the restroom and walk to class. Students are not able to do all of this for the amount of time given to the students to get to class. With that being said a lot of students have become more late because of only the 5 minute passing period. Students at Oakland Unified School District used to have a 7-8 minute passing period, but they recently changed this to 5 minutes. This change has significantly changed the amount of tardies throughout the year. They had a 25% more tardies within 1 term. By the end of the year they had less tardies by 4th term by only having a 10% decrease from tardies. Here at Mountain View high school, as Peter Harper says, “There is no time to get to class if you need to go to the restroom or go to the locker; I barely make it to class as the bell is ringing.” In conclusion, a few extra minutes between classes might be just the thing to improve our attendance problem.
