“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere,” said Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in his famous letter from birmingham jail. Admired by many, MLK is known for his leadership in the civil rights movements, protests, marches, sit-ins, and boycotts of the 1950’s and 1960’s. The effort that he and so many others fighting for rights gave was apparently all a waste. Racism, sexism, homophobia is alive and well in America’s “modern-day” society.
Many will deny the statement above because they argue that minorities are treated not just equal to caucasians, but better (looking at Fox news). Studies have been done to show that african-american teenage males were 21 times more likely to be killed by a police officer than their white counterparts in the years 2010-2012. A study done by the National Bureau of Economic Research even found that people with “black-sounding names” had to send out 50 percent more job applications than people with “white-sounding names” just to get a call back. Facts don’t lie, people of color do not have the same privilege that white americans have prospered from since the first native american was shot, the first african shipped over, or first hispanic was deported. Women of color have it even worse than the males.
Studies done by the AAUW (American Association of University Women) show hispanic women get 54 cents to every dollar a white male earns. Black women get 64 cents for every dollar. White women earn 74 cents for every dollar a man gets. Women everywhere are treated far worse than men are. Females have to argue as to why they should be allowed rights to their own body. Abortion is one of the most controversial topics that americans face today. Rape affects women all over the world. In the united states rape is not something people take lightly, yet almost always women don't get the justice they deserve.Citizens of america have this "boys will be boys" attitude which then lets men get away with the atrocities they have committed. L.G.B.T women might be the individuals in the gender that get it worst.
Transgender people are mercilessly persecuted on twitter, facebook, youtube, mainstream media, etc. Many insist caitlyn jenner is a grand movement forward, but this is a lie. Media repeatedly uses transphobic terms to describe and interview women and men. Fox and CNN want you to believe the L.G.B.T rights movement is over after the Supreme Court decision to legalize gay marriage throughout the nation. Kim Davis, the westboro baptist church, and others like them are perfect examples of the living parasite that is homophobia. Although, same-sex marriage has been legalized this doesn’t mean there aren’t “religious” groups who torment those who just want to be treated the same as everyone else.
Equality seems to be something only straight white cis americans are allowed to have. The grand country that is the USA loves to yell “equality,” but talking the talk is not the same as walking the walk.
