Let's talk about freedom for a moment shall we, but more importantly let's talk about High School Censorship. Censorship is the practice of officially examining books, movies, etc., and suppressing unacceptable parts. So let's talk about our first amendment. According to the constitution "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances." Except for in our schools, right? Wrong. High School censorship is wrong and should be fought against. Our Internet use, our book use and even what we are taught in schools in censored. What is the cost, an uneducated future? What cost is the true cost of censorship? If we all spoke out and said something about it would they still censor students opinions? Some may say our opinion is invalid. That our voices are not worth hearing. That students are a burden to society. Yet students need to be able to freely express ourselves. If a person is not willing to exercise this because it is a controversial topic. That will make people rebel, feel uncomfortable, or cause a ruckus. Then maybe our opinion is valid, then maybe having a rebellion about this topic is not a bad thing and might help everyone mature as a people and as a society. We are not what people decide to omit from us. People are who they are. We can be anything we want to be due to the freedom given out to white males who go with the popular religions and majority ideas and most importantly popular sexuality. People must expand themselves and their minds. Where in this so called free country people are still having to earn this right and respect is becoming a disgrace and a blemish to the American Ideal that most stand for. The American Ideal is the only reason America is here. Our Founding Fathers had to write about controversial topics in order to get to a place where they could secede from Britain and say “We will no longer play by your rules.” and it was hard to get there and some people didn't like that but they did it. They rebelled and without that rebellion we would still be with the UK paying taxes higher than the empire state building. Without rebellion nothing advances. When this country as a whole is tilting one way people without this right are trying to tilt it another. They will feel like they are in a whirlwind of horror where slurs and hate crimes are often acted towards them and who they are. The day you lose who you truly are. So Let’s speak up and speak out against censorship in our schools.
