As another school year kicks off and the doors open with many new and old faces, unfortunately faces tend to lie more than they should. Often times a smile shows inward peace. Where this might be true, it could also be a facade. Many know someone who has depression. Regardless of how “happy” a person might seem, society can never fully understand what is really going on. Some teens may never show signs of depression while others show all. In 2005 alone, Utah had three hundred and forty-eight suicides and the number is only increasing.
Several methods to help with depression include therapy, anti-depressants, hobbies, friends, and last but certainly not least, hotlines. If help is needed please talk to somebody. Basic warning signs of depression are; withdrawal, lack of energy, hopelessness, unstable emotions, suicidal thoughts or actions and poor self-esteem.
Self-esteem issues happen to everyone at one point or another. Ways to help this is to compliment others, and to compliment yourself. Taking a compliment is an important life skill. This will be used in many situations.
The media is a huge advantage in today’s society. This is a recent breakthrough and separates this generation from the previous. Do not misuse this privilege in order to bully someone else. If drastic help is needed call the national suicide prevention hotline at 1-800-273-8255.
