Everyone knows the virus that’s going around: COVID-19. How does this affect people across the United States? Well, first off, it gets them sick. This pandemic virus is making its way across the globe, and there are hundreds of lives that this virus is taking daily. On a more local level, how does this affect students? In several states, schools are doing online school, and teachers and students all over are learning how to homeschool.
In high school, many dances are being canceled, but there is one dance that most students — particularly seniors — see as the most important dance of the year: Prom. And now, Covid-19 has everyone asking, “Are they going to cancel Prom?”
Before this disease made it to Utah, there were many Mountain View students asking and being asked to Prom already. Girls already have their dresses, and boys have already made plans, but all of those are question marks for the time being.
As they wait for a state and school decision on Prom, many students at Mountain View have something to say about this.
One Mountain View senior said, “I’ve been looking forward to my senior prom for awhile. I usually do not even like dances, but senior Prom is special.”
They continued with, “Guys come on. Don’t cancel Prom, cancel Morp. Literally ask anyone and they will agree with me”
Zach Larson, a senior, said,, “I feel like it makes sense to cancel (school dances), but I would rather they be postponed because there is a chance that this will blow over in time to enjoy one or two.”
He continued, “They are the epitome of the social part of high school. You grow up hearing about Prom and how it's so much fun and just a magical night with friends. It's the thing that they include in movies when they are trying to show what high school is like. To lose that experience would be awful. You'd be losing one of the funnest and best social experiences available in high school.” It’s a sad time to miss out on one of the biggest dances of the year. Others feel differently for different reasons.
Another former student said, “I think Prom and Morp are almost certainly canceled. I love school dances, but it’s not a terribly big concern for me because I’m more sad about things like choir tour, graduation, concerts, and just regular school.”
She continued, “It would be sad, but I’m expecting them to be canceled. I feel like it’s ok because Prom is easy to make up. Just do your own Prom in your basement when this is all over.”
Who knows what the future will bring for students, and particularly MVHS seniors. Maybe they will be able to do both Prom and Morp, but maybe they won’t be able to do either. Whatever blows their way, though, Bruins have been reassured that they’ve got this.
