What is Legend of Dungeon? Why have I heard so many of my peers talking about it? Does this game have the potential to steal my money from right under my nose?
On November 20, 2013 Calvin Goble released a Kickstarter campaign to fund his development on Legend of Dungeon. In less than 24 hours, his goal of $5,000 was reached. By the end of the campaign, Goble had raised nearly $33,000. The final release was September 13, 2013.
This game is no run-of-the-mill co-op beat ‘em up; this is the standard for mediocre games. It’s all about getting as far as you can and picking up items along the way. Since the game is quite difficult and relies on some randomness to progress, it’s unlikely that players will finish the game in the first playthrough. I found myself backtracking through levels, scraping to find a useful weapon to progress. The game loses some brownie points for not including a save feature. The level pacing is nice but players find themselves getting bored of the repetitive scenery.
When a weapon was found, it was always something new and interesting that hadn’t been seen before in previous runs, which begs the question, why is every weapon drop random? If only this game had fewer Plants vs. Zombies and VR headset references to make it an attempt at being “in the times” as it were.
The game includes a cooperative aspect and it seems that it’s the way the game is meant to be played. I found myself getting further with someone else than all by myself. It adds some value for those who have siblings or friends to play games in some else’s house. There is about the same amount of difficulty finding a weapon, so the drops aren’t too bad. Of course, any game played with others makes it a touch better, so don’t get rowdy over it.
There is a pick-up and playability of this gem of generic games that makes it interesting from the start. It had meh lighting and same-y level design. The weapons and items are creative and fun to mess around with but hard to find. This game is almost meant to be cooperative and you’ll be missing out if you don’t go that route. Overall, the game is pretty meh.
