On December 15, the Battle of the Paddle - Mountain View’s swim team vs Orem’s swim team vs Timpanogos’s swim team - took place at the Orem Recreational Center to determine who was superior.
It was an exciting event. Mountain View performed the ceremonial “beheading of the tiger”. Basically, they rip the head off of a stuffed tiger on a stick while chanting frantically. After that, the games began.
Many people were involved in the meet. Spencer Faragher, freshman, said he had to do a 200 IM (all of the strokes), 200 freestyle, and 50 freestyle. When asked why he continued swimming despite how hard it was, he said he loved the “taste of victory”.
It was refreshing to watch each of the teams cheering their members on. Some shouted encouragement, others things such as “Go!” and “Stroke! Stroke! Stroke!” Hailey Larson, junior, said that she loved “egging her teammates on”.
Not everyone there was a swimmer. Emma Wood, older sister, was cheering for her little brother, Anson Wood. “[I] love to cheer for his races.”
The meet ended with the last two events being a pair of 400 free relays to the William Tell Overture. Everything from a simple 50 free to a 500 free was done. It was a triumphant end to a memorable night.
